If I reject worldly activities, God may see me as good enough.

Every step I take away from the world is a step toward God.

Our lives are like a white sheet that we must keep free of stains and tears.
But there is a big problem that no one can deny.
Humans are flawed.
Out of our hearts flow choices that tarnish our "white sheet".

We try to wash ourselves clean, denying ourselves food or other pleasures.

But the stain goes deeper than any outward cleansing.

Jesus said:
“It is what comes from inside that defiles you. For from within, out of a person’s heart, come evil thoughts,...” and all impurities.
Mark 7:20-21

Find hope

There is a story in Scripture that describes someone who tried to right their wrongs through self-denial.

After abandoning his father and wasting his money on wild living, a young man had to find work on a farm.
He was humiliated, hungry, and alone.
Then he remembered that his father's workers were well taken care of. He decided to return home and work as a servant.
He no longer saw himself worthy to be called his father's son.
To his surprise, when the young man's father saw him, he ran to meet him on the road.
The father’s joy overwhelmed them both!

He called for a feast to celebrate, saying:
“For this son of mine was dead and has now returned to life. He was lost, but now he is found.” So the party began.
Luke 15:24
